Warren & Emily SwanTrips → 2006 Steamtown & New England

We visited Emily’s brother’s family in Perrysburg, OH.  We camped at Hickory Run State Park near Scranton, PA for a couple of days, and visited Steamtown National Historic Site.

Statue of Liberty We dropped over to New Jersey to see the Statue of Liberty, before heading North to visit New England.  →

After driving through parts of 5 states in one day (PA, NJ, NY, CT, and MA) we camped a night at Massasoit State Park in Massachusetts.  For the next 4 days we stayed at Lamoine State Park near Mt. Desert Island in Maine.  From there we made day trips to several places.

Easternmost Point of the U. S. ← Here are Amy, Emily and Olive at the Easternmost Point of the United States, at Quoddy Head State Park near Lubec, Maine.  Daniel was out of the picture.  This is the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse — a “West” at the Easternmost Point?  Yes, because there is also an East Quoddy in Canada.

We got to watch “Old Sow” — the largest whirlpool in the Western hemisphere — perform a bit.  We spent a half a day at Bar Harbor (or “Bah Habah” as it’s called locally), and the other half of the day wandering around Acadia National Park; both on Mount Desert Island.

Ferry arrives at Swans Island We spent another day taking the ferry from Bass Harbor to Swan’s Island (or Swans Island).  How do you like that?  Our own island!  →

It was fun wandering around this island, hiking to Fine Sand Beach, and visiting Hochamock Head Lighthouse (closed for renovation).

Back on Mount Desert Island, we visited Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, which Warren & Emily remembered from 1984.

After leaving Maine, we went through New Hampshire and Vermont, stopping in the latter at Wait’s River to take a picture of this picturesque town.

Waits River, Vermont ← Here’s our new van at Wait’s River, Vermont.  Compare this picture with our 1989 vacation picture of this town (several vans ago).

Staying near Luzerne, NY for a couple of days, we visited forts from the French & Indian Wars.  From there we headed west to see Niagara Falls again.  We stayed a night at Erie State Park, NY before heading home.  On this vacation, the 3 kids that we had with us visited enough states that they are only missing one state that the adults had been to, and that’s Delaware.
